CHAPTER 26

Brielle

Walking down the hallway, the belled-out skirts of my ivory wedding dress flowing around me, I felt like a princess.

I wore white gloves, the kind that went up past my elbows.

And my hair. My hair was in an elaborate up-do, but a few strands had been left down to frame my face.

Sadie had done this. Sadie had transformed me into a princess.

That’s how I felt, anyway, like a princess, as I left my bedroom and walked toward the stairs, my blood pounding dangerously through my veins, my pulse beating rapidly.

Aunt Victoria and Momma—Greyson’s mother—followed behind me.

Someone called them back, George, I think, and they stopped.

I kept walking, lured by the wedding march. The same orchestra that had been there during the ball was back.

Only this time, I had a place. I belonged.

Greyson waited for me somewhere below. It was barely nine o’clock, but it seemed like forever since I’d seen him last night.

We were getting married fast. In the future, it would be considered unusual to marry someone just days after meeting. But here in the past, there seemed to be no reason to wait.

Besides, didn’t we know, really, deep down, if someone was right for us within minutes? Maybe it was just me. Although I’d never experienced it, I’d always believed in love at first sight.

I hadn’t planned on getting married. I hadn’t planned on traveling to the past. I hadn’t planned on getting married. And I hadn’t planned on moving back to Pittsburgh.

But I also had not planned on meeting Greyson.

I had no doubt that he was the man I wanted to marry. When I was away from him, I could think of nothing else. When we were together, we could hardly keep from looking at each other. Touching each other.

I had pushed away the doubts I’d had. The ones that everything was too easy. Too convenient. It was a strange thing to have doubts about anyway.

As I had time to think some about the spell that had somehow brought us together, I had accepted that it was one of those things that was meant to be.

Fate, I’d decided. Decided and accepted.

The grandfather clock in the foyer below began to strike the hour.

One.

I could just barely hear it above the music and voices drifting up from the foyer.

Two.

George said something, behind me, but I couldn’t make out his words.

Three.

I felt a little like I was walking on air. Like my feet weren’t quite touching the floor.

Four.

Even though I was only a few feet away from the top of the stairs, the music wasn’t so loud anymore. It was rather muffled.

Five.

Someone said something. I couldn’t tell where the voice came from. Was it Greyson? It was. It was Greyson. He called out my name.

Six.

I blinked. I blinked and when I opened my eyes, the air felt different. Instead of candle wax, I smelled… cleaning products. Everything was different.

Seven.

There was just the sound of the clock striking the hour. Nothing else. No music. No voices.

Eight.

Silence. Nothing more than the clock’s echo.
